Demon Slayer Video Game In The Works

Posted on February 22, 2021February 22, 2021 by Dakota Deitsch

Earlier this week, we got a glimpse of the second season of Demon Slayer. The franchise has been doing extremely well over in Japan, with its newest movie breaking Japanese box office records. Season two is highly anticipated and with the arrival of season 1 on Netflix and Hulu, it’s been gathering a lot of attention in the West, as well. It is becoming a rather large franchise.

Along with the preview of season 2, we also got to see a teaser trailer for the new Demon Slayer video game this is coming. The game is titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hinokami Keppuutan, and is being developed by CyberConnect2, the same studio behind all of the Naruto fighting games. Based on the trailer, it seems like this game is following in the footsteps of the Naruto games.

The animation is almost exactly like the anime’s, which is great because the anime is absolutely gorgeous. Based on the gameplay shown in the trailer, it looks like this will be a fighter of some kind. That shouldn’t be too surprising, knowing that CyberConnect2 is behind this game. You can check out the gameplay footage below:

While there’s no denying that a combat-filled fighter could be exactly what fans want for a video game from this franchise, I can’t help but wonder if there aren’t going to be many fans left wanting more. There’s a ton of content in this franchise that could easily be utilized in a better way.

Demon Slayer follows a young Tanjiro Kamado and his sister Nezuko Kamado, as he fights demons and tries to find a cure for the demon curse that has afflicted his sister. There is plenty of lore explored in the anime, as well as differing types of demons.

With a story like that, it would be a shame for a video game not to be as deep as the anime itself. Furthermore, I’d also love to see a more open world, and RPG elements. This franchise is practically begging for a good, in-depth game that explores all of its lore and environments in its entirety.

Still, the game looks fantastic and it is still very early on, so there could very well be more features we don’t know about. Based on CyberConnect2’s history though, it is safe to assume that it will end up being a fighter. While most anime titles get a video game adaptation, they almost always get made into a fighter. Just look at the My Hero Academy games. That is another franchise that would definitely be cool to see a more in-depth approach to its video games.

Regardless, I am eager to see more about this title and what we can expect from it. Along with this PlayStation 4 title, there was also a mobile game that was supposed to be released last year, but it was delayed. So far there isn’t any news on when it’ll be released, but it should probably come out sometime this year.
