If you play Fire Emblem Heroes, you already know that it’s a simplified, mobile version of the Fire Emblem games. There’s a lot of microtransactions, loot boxes, gambling mechanics, etc. Still, it’s pretty fun, and there are frequent seasonal events and updates. If you’re into mobile gaming, there are a lot worse games you could play.
The Gatekeeper
If you play Heroes, you may have also been involved in voting for the inclusion of the newest playable character. This year, for the 4th anniversary of Heroes, the fans’ choice is The Gatekeeper, a long-running meme in the Fire Emblem community. The Gatekeeper has inspired lots of fan love on Reddit and Twitter. The meme is now legitimized since Nintendo is now officially recognizing the fan love for The Gatekeeper with his inclusion in Heroes.Â
The Gatekeeper is a nameless NPC in Fire Emblem: Three Houses for the Nintendo Switch. He never actually faces battle in-game, nor is he a recruitable character for your team. What he does do, is be very polite. He’s always standing by the play area’s main gate with helpful tips and kind words. This is why fans wanted to see him in Heroes. Since he can’t be recruited in Three Houses, at least you can have him on your roster in Heroes.
Heroes’ 4th anniversary
The news was released in a Fire Emblem Heroes update video posted to the Nintendo Mobile Youtube page. There’s quite a lot of information in the video. There’s a ton of log-in bonuses and quests coming up for the game’s 4th anniversary. There will be plenty more content coming up, and a lot of content that has already been implemented as of February 1st. If you want to save your money on micro-transactions, I guess now would be the time to log in.
The voting for playable characters in Heroes happens yearly, and fans actually choose two characters to join Heroes. One man, one woman. In the woman category, Marianne, a popular recruitable student in Three Houses, takes the spot. In second place is Eirika from Fire Emblem Sacred Stones. As someone who is replaying Sacred Stones again, I am a bit disappointed, as Eirika has put her rapier straight through my heart. Oh well.
In second place for the men’s category is Marth. It seems like Marth would be the obvious choice, as he is a recurring protagonist of the series and was the first character that most fans in the west saw of the Fire Emblem franchise at all with his appearance in Smash Bros. Melee. But does Marth greet you at the doorway after a tough mission with kind words and advice? No, he doesn’t.

The Gatekeeper will be included in Fire Emblem Heroes sometime this summer. It is unclear what he’ll be capable of, or what color orb he’ll be. In fact, it’s tough to guess, since he’s a generic NPC in the game he’s pulled from. I hope he will be extremely overpowered, in order to give a sense of wholeness to this meme. Democracy wins again.
