JRPG Fans Rejoice! Star Ocean: The 2nd Story and Super Mario RPG are Getting Remakes This Year!

Posted on June 22, 2023 by Samuel Rivera

In the middle of the Final Fantasy XVI commotion, due to Metacritic finally awarding it an aggregate score; Nintendo held one of its most memorable Nintendo Direct episodes in recent memory. Plenty of interesting games were revealed, but for starved JRPG fans, two particular announcements were Mana from heaven.

Super Mario RPG Remake Will Arrive on November 17

For many JRPG fans, who turn into fans during the 32-bit era, Super Mario RPG might be one of the best RPGs that they missed, and Nintendo, cleverly enough, is bringing the game back for a new audience, at the moment where Mario (and Nintendo itself) couldn’t be more popular due to the animated’s film success at the box office.

For comparison’s sake, The Mario film earned $1.3 billion at the box office, while the live action reboot of  The Little Mermaid, which an establish and beloved film franchise, failed to garner a profit with only a $470 million return from movie goers. These numbers are more staggering when taking into account the Mario’s film cost $100 million (not counting marketing costs) to make as opposed to the $250 million (not counting marketing costs) that The Little Mermaid cost Disney to make.

Nintendo’s main mascot proved to be worth a lot more than Disney’s established properties. Super Mario RPG will arrive on November 17 to a market that is thirsty for more Mario themed video games.

Despite Super Mario RPG’s Announcement, It Is The Star Ocean: The 2nd Story Remake That Has Me Giddy

So, it is well known, not only by our readers, but I think it is a generally accepted as truth, that The Star Ocean series has ‘sucked’ since its 3rd entry. The games have ranged from pedestrian – to bad – and none has ever managed to capture the grandeur, and just plain awesomeness of the series’ PS1 entry. An entry so epic, and so ambitious, that it took me about 90 hours to finish, and I still had plenty of side stuff to do.

To say that watching the gorgeous remake playing (clips of it at least) on Youtube brought tears to my eyes, is an understatement. The 3-D rendering of its former pre-rendered worlds looks stunning, Square Enix nailed the look with the 2-D sprites that closely resemble those in the original game, and music, Motoi Sakuraba’s finest work, sounds as glorious as ever.

November 2nd can’t come soon enough! Star Ocean: The 2nd Story is one of the greatest RPGs of all time, and it finally gets a much deserved second chance at life! This is the remake that many of us didn’t ask for (I mean, the game was so awesome that it didn’t need a remake), but perhaps the one that we truly needed.
