Sony Fixes Important PlayStation 5 Backwards Compatibility Issues

Posted on December 25, 2020December 25, 2020 by Dakota Deitsch

The PlayStation 5 offers something the PlayStation 4 never did and that is backwards compatibility. This is wonderful news for most of Sony’s customers who might already have a pretty large PS4 game library. The PS5 also breathes more life into those games, making frame rates smoother and load times faster.

However, with that backwards compatibility, came a very frustrating feature for many players. For games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla that offer a free upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version, it turned out to be very difficult to understand which version you were downloading or playing. Many players found themselves still playing the PS4 version, even after downloading the PlayStation 5 versions.

In this recent update, Sony finally addresses this issue. Posted to Twitter by user Tidux this new update is shown to notify you which version you are playing. It will also make you aware of the PS5 version if it is available.

After Sony’s latest update the PlayStation 5 will inform players whether they are playing the PlayStation 5 or PS4 version of games, Assassins Creed: Valhalla (Pictured) will benefit from this improvement.

This will make it more clear to players which versions they are playing, and hopefully start to alleviate some of that stress and confusion. It isn’t the easiest approach to the problem, but it does finally solve it to some degree.

Microsoft is using something much easier though, called Smart Delivery. This automatically downloads or updates your games to the best available version. That means that you won’t have to worry about accidentally playing the last gen version of your game, and you can rest easy knowing everything is up to date.

Sony still continues to keep the versions separated, so at least now it will notify you if a better version is available. Personally, I’m still waiting on a fix to prevent my PlayStation 5 from continuously trying to download the PlayStation 4 version of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, when I have the PS5 version already installed. I guess that’s the downside to having the PS4 disc.

This has also been an ongoing issue with the backwards compatibility feature. When you turn your console on or wake it up from rest mode, it will begin the download of the PS4 version of the game if you have a PS4 disc inserted. Yes backwards compatibility is a wonderful thing to have on a new console, but with it comes some hardships that don’t feel next gen.

There are still quite a few issues with the PlayStation 5 but this is a step in the right direction. Hopefully we will see some more updates soon that can help make our experience that much more enjoyable.
