Studio MDHR, the developer responsible for the popular platformer Cuphead, released a statement last week stating that the game’s first DLC, The Delicious Last Course, will be delayed yet again.
Announced in 2018, The Delicious Last Course (or, DLC — haha! I get it!) was originally set for a 2019 release. In July of 2019, MDHR announced that it would be delayed until 2020. This delay was made with the intent of their team dedicating themselves to a quality product. In their statement regarding the first delay, the team stated that they wanted to maintain an environment that is “healthy and sustainable for their team.”
With 2020 drawing to a close, the developer announced that it would be delaying the DLC yet again. It seems MDHR is maintaining the same mindset of quality for their company and their game. It’s just that this time, they are delaying the DLC due to a combination of quality control and, unfortunately, COVID-19.
According to developers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer: “Rather than compromise on our vision in response to COVID, we’ve made the difficult decision to push back the release of The Delicious Last Course until we are confident it will delight the Cuphead community the way we feel it should.”

Before Cuphead fans throw in the towel, there is some hopeful-sounding language at the end of MDHR’s statement. While there is now no specific release date for the DLC, the statement suggests that The Delicious Last Course will drop sometime next year. One could argue that the DLC is delayed “indefinitely,” but I do not think the situation is that dire. From their statement: “We know many of you have been waiting to return to Inkwell Isles, and our goal is to make the trip back there next year a truly magical one.”
When The Delicious Last Course finally does come out, fans are confident it will be full of some high-quality content. So far, it has been confirmed that there is a new playable character joining Cuphead and Mughead named Ms. Chalice.
There will be new weapons, which players can use to go back and get new personal bests on old bosses. Gameplay footage has been out for a while, and it seems the DLC will be predominately snow and ice themed.
Speaking of bosses, there will be at least a few. According to the DLC’s Steam Page, players will “traverse a brand new Inkwell Isle and wallop the most wacky and monstrous bosses Cuphead has faced yet,” suggesting that the new island will have multiple levels. Confirmed bosses from the gameplay footage are a kind of yeti that can shoot ice swords out of the ground, and what seems like a platforming-heavy mountain boss fight.
The plot will center around helping out Chef Saltbaker. The Delicious Last Course’s Steam page also explicitly states that this is Cuphead’s final adventure. So, this may be the first and last Cuphead DLC. Hopefully, Studio MDHR maintains the same quality they’ve held for Cuphead, and that The Delicious Last Course comes out sometime next year.
