Legend of Dragoon

Legend of Dragoon Sells 2 Million Units as a PS Classic, and Sony Plans a Revival

Posted on April 1, 2023April 1, 2023 by Samuel Rivera

After decades of lurking in the darkness, The Legend of Dragoon grabbed some headlines this year thanks to shady emulation, and fanfare from its sect of fans.

While I have previously referred to LoD fans, as the “Legend of Dragoon Cult”, I guess I will have to start calling the group something else now, as 2 million downloads (at $9.99) within a few months is nothing to scoff at.

Sony Planning a “Revival” of Some Sort for the Franchise

Sony’s VP of Marketing, Julius Ponyward, expressed some of the company’s plans at a recent investor call in which recent moves to PS Classic, and PS Now platforms were discussed.

“The Legend of Dragoon’s commercial performance is surprising, but not totally unexpected. Fans have clamored for a revival of this franchise for a long time. These sales numbers get us closer to such a goal.”  Ponyward said.

As for what a Legend of Dragoon “revival” would entail for Sony, it remains to be seen. Many have clamored for a “Fall of Winglies” storyline, as The Legend of Dragoon, despite all of its faults, has a deep back story to work with.

The Legend of Dragoon Director Responds to the Game’s Newfound Success

“It is too bad.” Masayuki Kasebe, the original game’s director expressed in a recent podcast with Sempai.net. “I wish the game would have had this type of reception when it originally launched. That way, maybe, I wouldn’t have been fired.”

Kasebe explained that his team at Japan Studio was seen as the dark sheep of the company due to the game’s critical failure, and its inability to recoup Sony’s financial investment.

“You see…there are things that companies don’t like. They don’t like losing money, so they fired me. Put me on the street like a dog.” Kasebe explained that he had a draft for a prequel, but Sony told him to never show his face again at Sony Japan’s offices.

When asked about a revival of the franchise, Kasebe scoffed at the notion, “A revival of what? The original team is long gone, if I am not there to steer the ship, it will crash harder than the Titanic. Did you watch Dragon Ball Evolution? If you did, my condolences to you, but that’s how a sequel for The Legend of Dragoon would fare, in terms of quality, and over all fidelity to the source material.”

“Sony Executives laughed at me when I told them that I had crafted a masterpiece in The Legend of Dragoon, but who is laughing now? Who is laughing now? Damn…I guess Sony still is…”

All the way to the bank Kasebe! Poor soul. Either way, Legend of Dragoon fans should be excited, a sequel or even a Remake is now in the cards!

About as many people read our April Fools in 2021 as bought the LoD PS4/5 rerelease, so we consider it a success. We reviewed the original game when it was released and specialize in RPGs/JRPGs.

As far as we’re concerned, you’re welcome, LoD fans, we got you your re-release and hopefully we get a prequel soon. We love JRPGs too. We’re an independent site so we don’t have to pretend to be neutral in our opinions. That might be a new concept in 2023, but it’s ok if a publication dislikes what you love. It’s art. That we disliked it in 99/00 compared to contemporaries such as FF9 and Chrono Cross, as a Google trusted review site, gives LoD’s cult status legitimacy.

I don’t understand all the salt from clearly marked April Fools, with made up director names (clearly fake), saying LoD is a Panzer Dragoon property (clearly false), etc., except maybe that library class in highschool and college about first party, second party and third party sources was worth the time. We provided imo too many hints we figured would immediately be picked up on. The source we quoted was Sempai.net for goodness sake, which wasn’t even a live domain in 2021.

Anyway, Andrew, I hope you enjoy the rerelease and we sincerely do hope we get a prequel or something eventually.

I believe that I could help out with a sequel. I played the game everyday for years. That and Yugioh Duelist of the Roses. I believe that if there is to be any hope of a revitalization that maybe you guys could reach out to a different company and build together on a better plan than what Sony has to offer. Don’t get me wrong, they made some decent points of what we could expect. The real question is how do you want the vision of a sequel that wouldn’t suck to bloom? I absolutely love everything about the game. I found it to be a very moving and effective story. There’s a lot of gaps to work with and even if we remade it, it just doesn’t feel right. But I will never stop believing in my dream. Find a company that will help you build your empire back up. I have waited for a very long time for people to understand what gold this game was. And now they sold another 2 million digital copies.

A sequel would be great as well as a remake of the original.

I know this is an April Fool’s joke, and I loathe you for it. I’ve been waiting for a remake or a sequel for over 25 years.

Unless Kasebe is at the helm steering the ship I’m not buying the sequel. He has a point comparing a sequel to Dragon Ball: Evolution.

Sony Japan should rehire this genius and his team, then apologize to them. They won’t though because they won’t see where they were wrong. It’s always the underdogs who get shat on. Like Kasebe said, Sony will fail with this. Just do a remake of it like with FFVII and be done with it.

I loved this game when it came out. For me it was right up there next to the final fantasy games. I would love to see a prequel, remake with the new technology, and of course a continuation of the game. I believe it could be a big hit just final fantasy, dragon quest, and breath of fire even though it died out ( would be awesome to that come back as well ). Please make more Legend of Dragoon games
