This past weekend marked Yasunori Mitsuda’s 50th birthday. The famed (Xenogears/Chrono Series) composer thanked his fans in a tweet where he hinted at a big announcement for one of his current projects scheduled to take place next month.
Will it be the Chrono Cross Remake?
Hard to say, but let us first take a look at Mitsuda’s actual statement:
本当に多くの方から誕生日メッセージをいただきありがとうございます。お一人お一人に返信が出来ず申し訳ありません。このお礼は、作品にてバッチリお返しをさせていただきます😀早ければ(運が良ければ)来月、一発目の発表をさせてもらいますのでお楽しみに!!

Okay, I assume that most of you do not have the ability to read text in Japanese, and that is fair, neither do I. Thanks to the magic of google translate, however, we are able to read into Mitsuda’s hopeful message:
Thank you so much for your birthday messages. I’m sorry I couldn’t reply to each person. This thank you will be returned to you in the work. At the earliest (if you are lucky), we will announce the first one next month, so please look forward to it! – Yasunori Mitsuda
Given that Mitsuda is working on a couple of ‘rumored’ projects. It seems that apart from the Chrono Cross ‘Remake’, the third entry in the Xenoblade Chronicle series might also be under development as we speak.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3’s existence has been unofficially confirmed by voice actress, Jenna Coleman, who stated in an interview with the Video Game Chronicle that, “I think they’re going to do another (Xenoblade game). Common knowledge? Don’t know… Yeah I think they’re going to do another… Not sure if I’m allowed to say that.”
So, given that she said something that she might have not been ‘allowed’ to say, and the fact that the series has continued to sell well for Nintendo, it is a no-brainer that a third game is on its way.
If all of these rumors prove true, I would venture to say that regardless of what game is announced next month, JRPG fans are in for ‘win-win’ scenario.
However, it would be awesome for old-school JRPG gamers if Mitsuda, and Square Enix were to announce the long rumored remaster of Chrono Cross.
Why the Internet Thinks Chrono Cross is the PS1 Classic Being Remade
We reported late last year that Chrono Cross was rumored to be receiving an HD Remaster or even a proper ‘Remake’ at the time of that writing. The rumors grew in strength last year when Irish Singer, Éabha McMahon, said that they (herself and Mitsuda) had recorded music for a remake project with an Irish music producer and his daughter.
Then came Chrono Cross’ reemergence in modern gaming with its Another Eden crossover event. Square Enix had allowed for similar cross over situations with its internal properties being featured in other publisher’s works such as Sephiroth and Cloud making an appearance on Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros.
These collaborations are helpful for franchises as they allow its characters and therefore, the game’s name to reach a wider amount of gaming public that it otherwise would have without the collaboration. Chrono Cross making a comeback in Another Eden seemed like a resounding confirmation that its Remake/Remaster rumors are true.
Chrono Cross is the Likeliest Square Enix Candidate For a Remake
Well, Square Enix has already remastered every Final Fantasy game from the PS2 era, and even other less popular games such as Saga Frontier. Given that a Remaster of something like Xenogears would be a more complex task, the other big property that the company has from the era is Chrono Cross.
So yes, Given Square Enix’s history with remasters Chrono Cross makes perfect sense, but since there is a chance that the game is a full ‘Remake’, I would like to bring another example to table in the form of Secret of Mana’s remake.
It wouldn’t be out of character for Square Enix to give Chrono Cross a similar “not state of the art” visual treatment. Fingers crossed!
