New Hyrule Warriors Announced by Nintendo: Age of Calamity

Posted on September 8, 2020January 9, 2021 by Mont Cessna

Nintendo has surprised everyone again by announcing another new game this week. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity launches November 20th, 2020. Last week, Nintendo announced Super Mario 3D All-Stars, a remastered collection of classic 3D Mario games. Until that point, we thought only Pikman 3 Deluxe was left to be released in 2020.

According to Nintendo, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is set 100 years before The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and promises to be action-packed.

See Hyrule 100 years before the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game and experience the events of the Great Calamity

Join the struggle that brought Hyrule to its knees. Learn more about Zelda, the four Champions, the King of Hyrule and more through dramatic cutscenes as they try to save the kingdom from Calamity. The Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity game is the only way to firsthand see what happened 100 years ago.

– Battle hordes of Hyrule’s most formidable foes –

From barbaric Bokoblins to towering Lynels, Ganon’s troops have emerged in droves. Playable heroes like Link, Zelda and more must use their distinct abilities to carve through hundreds of enemies to save Hyrule from the impending Calamity.

Made by Koei Tekmo Games and rated T for teen, Age of Calamity supports up to two players and all the Switch modes. Like most Switch games, it will be released in Japanese, French, German, Dutch, Chinese, English, Spanish, Italian and Korean. The game file size itself has already been announced in comes in at a hefty 15.6 GB. Better start clearing space now!

Interestingly enough, Nintendo chose to have Eiji Aonuma, the producer of The Legend of Zelda series, to announce the release of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Aonuma starts off by saying that the sequel to Breath of the Wild is still under development but that you can still enjoy the Zelda universe with this game in the meantime.

The video promises to shed more light on the story of Hyrule’s nobles and certainly pushes the Switch to the maximum for graphics. Dozens, if not hundreds, of enemies appear on the screen at once in large scale battles and we even get a sneak peak at the warriors you can play as along with some scenes of a youngish Impa kicking butt.

Aonuma, goes on in the video to say that while the “Great Calamity” that happened 100 years before was mentioned in Breath of the Wild, this game lets you play through it.

Next on the video, the producer of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity–Yosuke Hayashi–introduces himself and says that it was Aonuma who approached Koei Tekmo Games and broached the idea of making a Hyrule Warriors game centered around the Great Calamity.

Hayashi says that his Hyrule Warriors team is working closely with The Legend of Zelda team for the first time on game play, game design and the overall game world.

Aonuma finishes out the video by saying that he hopes both fans of Hyrule Warriors and fans of Breath of the Wild will play and enjoy Age of Calamity.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is certainly positioned for both critical and commercial success with a promise of being the best Hyrule Warriors game to date and perhaps a canon addition to The Legend of Zelda series.
