Sephiroth, originally from Final Fantasy VII, is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in December 2020. Announced during the 2020 Video Game Awards just moments ago at the time of writing this article, Sephiroth will be the newest DLC fighter.
Coming directly from a recent remake of Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth has been traveling around between video games for a long time. Originally debuting in 1997’s FFVII for the original Playstation, he is the main antagonist of that title. Once Sephiroth is added to Smash Bros. Ultimate, he will be the 3rd of 6 eventual fighters added in the Fighter Pass Vol. 2 DLC. Or, he will be able to be downloaded individually as Challenger Pack Number 8.
He has been seen in the Kingdom Hearts series since its first installment, and will now be a full fighter in Smash. Cloud must have been lonely, being the only Final Fantasy character in Smash Bros. Now, Cloud will fight his foe Sephiroth over and over again for eternity.
Gameplay-wise, it seems he will be a pretty quick character. The brief gameplay shows that he will have a quick dodge, and a somewhat floaty weight. Similar to Cloud, it looks like Sephiroth will be a melee-range sword user with some ranged options. Wielding his signature katana, his reveal cinematic sets the tone for his powerful and frightening character.
Sephiroth will have a powered up form, probably similar to Cloud’s or Joker’s. Though it is unconfirmed exactly how this happens, Sephiroth will be able to change form during the fight, sprouting one wing to do more damage with his abilities. Specifically, it seems his ranged shadow attack will get a larger, explosive area of effect in his new form.

While it could be a power up system more similar to Hero’s, my guess would be it will mirror Cloud’s Limit Break, which gains power both passively through dealing and taking damage, and actively with his Down-B. Moreover, the gameplay footage reveals Sephiroth will come equipped with a shield capable of deflection.
Though there is no gameplay footage of his Final Smash, it seems to be implied that Sephiroth will embody his final form in some way. Facing down Cloud in the announcement cinematic, Sephiroth becomes a beautiful hand-drawn depiction of his final form from Final Fantasy VII.
The final part of the announcement trailer reveals that Sephiroth will be coming in December 2020. That’s right, there is no specific release date. Still, considering that it is already the 10th of December, Smash Fans will probably not have to wait long.
So far, Fighter Pass Vol. 2 has had some pretty surprising entries. Min Min is the first fighter to not feature a main character of its original game. Steve & Alex introduced Minecraft to the Smash universe for the first time. Personally, I am excited to play as Sephiroth. As much as I love their games, I feel compelled to say… at least Sephiroth isn’t another Fire Emblem character.
