We are less than two weeks away from the PlayStation 5 release date and people are already getting their hands on the new DualSense controller. The controller hit retailers last week and everyone from writers to YouTubers have nothing but good things to say about it. This is great news for Sony because it will set them apart from the Xbox consoles set to come out next week as well.
Sony’s decision to leave the “DualShock” name in the past and move forward with the DualSense is a rather refreshing one. PS4 owners did not have the best experience with the DualShock 4 at launch. The controller’s rubber thumbsticks wore out easily and the battery life was not great either. On top of that, you could not replace the batteries either. It goes without saying that the PS5 could do well to be complimented by a unique controller.
The DualSense controller retains some of the DualShock 4 features such as the built in battery, integrated speaker and of course, motion sensor. New features include the immersive haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. These features bring a brand new experience to gaming, allowing you to feel the differences in things like environment or weapon selection. Imagine walking on grass and then switching to pavement and feeling a different vibration for each terrain or pulling back a bowstring and feeling the triggers tighten. This allows a new level of immersion that was not possible with the DualShock 4 or any other previous controller on the market.
The DualSense will also have a create button. It will provide players with more ways to create content and broadcast gameplay than ever before. Along with the built in speaker, it will also have a built in microphone. Players will be able to chat with friends straight from their controller and you can mute it at any time with the mute button.
It is easy to see why the DualSense is getting so much attention. It comes at a rather perfect time too, as the industry needs a controller upgrade. Motion controls haven’t been too popular since the Wii era, and the DualShock 4’s touchpad and lightbar weren’t utilized much. I remember the touchpad being used to open the maps in most games, and the lightbar just draining the battery of the controller. Very few games took advantage of these new features. The DualSense is standing out and here are some examples.
IGN interviewed Phil Tibitoski and Kevin Zuhn from developer Young Horses, the creators behind the new title Bugsnax, who say they haven’t felt anything quite as intricate or sensitive as the haptic feedback of the DualSense controller. They also describe how they use the controllers feedback to respond to the change of environment in their game.
Jason Schreier, a video game reporter for Bloomberg News says in a recent tweet that the Dualsense feels more “next gen” than any graphical improvements he’s seen. He also says he will be doing a more in-depth review closer to the PS5 launch date. Marques Brownlee also mentions the controller feeling more “next gen” than any other piece.
With all of these reviews and many more flowing in, the hype for the PS5 and its DualSense controller continues to grow. With new console releases, it is always hard to judge how things will wash out but it looks like the DualSense controller is already making a name for itself.
