This week, soon after Disney announced Lucasfilm Games, they also announced their current partnership with Ubisoft to create a new Star Wars game. Massive Entertainment will be handling the development of that game.
Massive Entertainment is the same studio behind projects like Tom Clancy’s The Division and FarCry 3 among others. Their experience with creating open-world games and their in-house game engine, Snowdrop, will no doubt help them craft this new Star Wars experience.
“The vast Star Wars lore is an incredible source of inspiration for our teams. This is the beginning of a long-term collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm Games, and we are pleased to be working hand-in-hand to build upon the incredible legacy of Lucasfilm to create a game that we know Star Wars fans will love,” Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft CEO commented on the project.
The game is still very much in early development, but what we do know is that it will be open-world and story-driven. The team at Massive Entertainment working on the project are extremely passionate about Star Wars and are looking forward to sending longtime fans and newcomers alike on their new journey.
They are working hard to create an experience that Star Wars fans haven’t seen in a video game yet. Their goal is to create a brand new story with new characters, while keeping everything familiar about Star Wars still intact. The team has been working closely with Lucasfilm Games, and have been on the same page with them since the beginning. This is good news because it means that Lucasfilm Games is very involved in this project.

One main reason Massive Entertainment was selected to develop this game is because of their technology within their studio. Their game engine Snowdrop is fast, flexible and powerful. Combine that with the studio’s long history with open-world development, and the choice is clear. They also have a brilliant and talented team under their belt who are all familiar with Snowdrop and how it works.
Snowdrop was created with forward-thinking technology in mind. The next gen technology of the new consoles will allow it to be pushed even further, making this a very exciting project. Massive Entertainment has stated that it will be able to create a Star Wars world like none we have ever seen.
With this news, Star Wars’ future with video games is surely bright. Respawn’s Jedi: The Fallen Order was a wonderful game, but not open-world. However, it did very well for itself and its story-driven approach was a refreshing direction for a Star Wars game to take. An open-world game has been a long time requestfrom Star Wars fans though, so this is no doubt exciting for many.
It is also nice to see how dedicated Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment are to the Star Wars franchise. It is good to know how involved Lucasfilm Games is with the project, and how much influence they have. The partnership between them and Ubisoft sounds solid and exciting. You can read more here about their excitement for the project and their dreams for it. I’m definitely interested to hear more about the project when they are ready to show us.
