Final Fantasy VI is a legendary game with plenty of iconic moments. The opera scene, the introductory march towards Narshe, Celes’ suicide scene, etc. are gaming moments firmly entrenched in the medium’s history. Thus, Square Enix must be very cautious in how it updates these memorable moments.
Fans Let Square Enix Know That Sabin’s Train Scene Was Off
We’re still hard at work polishing Final Fantasy VI pixel remaster in time for launch next week, and we saw some of your comments that the Phantom Train didn’t flip during Meteor Strike. The video was taken from a pre-release version, and will be adjusted in time for launch!

Final Fantasy has never been particularly known for its realism, and perhaps one of the most ridiculous scenes in the franchise’s history is Sabin ‘suplexing’ a train upside down. It was an extraordinary move that became a beloved moment for many Final Fantasy VI fans.
Square Enix made the terrible mistake of getting the scene wrong in a tweet showcasing the remastered take on the iconic moment. The problem is that Sabin’s suplex in the new remastered version of the game does not flip the train upside down (like a suplex should), but instead it managed to lift and drop the train without flipping it on its back.
Hardcore FFVI fans did not like the change and quickly made their displeasure known. Square Enix, realizing its massive blunder, quickly apologized and promised that the scene would be fixed by its February 23, 2022, release date (today).
For the sake of the remaster, let us hope that Sqaure Enix gets it right; otherwise, there will be much complaining about the scene from the game’s fans after its release.
What is Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster?

It is a remastered take on the original Final Fantasy VI’s visual formula that doesn’t stray too far away from its 2-D roots. However, it gives the game a pseudo-3D pixel art look reminiscent of Square Enix’s recent Octopath Traveller.
In other words, this is as good as Final Fantasy VI can look while keeping the original art style in place and avoiding a costly remake utilizing a modern rendering engine. That said, Final Fantasy VI is perhaps the most popular Final Fantasy game there is after Final Fantasy VII, and I know that many fans want a proper remake.
Will Final Fantasy VI Ever Receive a Remake?
I wouldn’t bet against it. Final Fantasy VI is certainly beloved and has, in retrospective, gained a ton of followers. Final Fantasy VI was not as popular as it could have been when it first debuted on the SNES back in 1994, but it steadily gained acclaim over the 1990s decade. Eventually, it became a massive critical darling and fan favorite.
Many respected lists from magazines even placed the game ahead of Final Fantasy VII in “all-time great” listings. Furthermore, the game has maintained a superb legacy in terms of its quality. I think Square Enix will take a hard look at remaking this gem if the pixel remaster sells well enough to merit it.
Surprisingly, there are rumors about Final Fantasy IX being remade instead. These rumors surfaced because of an Nvidia leak that correctly predicted Chrono Cross’s eventual remaster announcement months before anyone had any idea that the PS1 classic was getting a chance at a second life.
Beyond Final Fantasy IX, I think Final Fantasy VI would be a great candidate for a modern remake, though some gamers will stick to their guns and state that the original was perfect as it was. In that case, Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster should be just what the doctor ordered for series’ fans.
