After the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S launched on November 10th, users have been reporting problems with their new consoles. Ranging from hardware issues to technical difficulties, just how game-breaking are these issues? Is it really true that your new Xbox can spontaneously combust?
Debunked: Will my Xbox explode?
First, let’s get the misinformation out of the way and have a good laugh. Because despite the legitimate problems with the consoles, there has been a lot of misinformation floating around too. Videos of the Xbox smoking made some people worry their new console was going to blow up. But this has been debunked as a user issue. Believe it or not, in an official tweet, Xbox had to tell gamers: “We can’t believe we have to say this, but please do not blow vape smoke into your Xbox Series X.”
Legitimate Problems
Now, onto some of the real issues that users are facing. Polygon’s has reported on various reports from users of disc drive problems. This includes videos of the Xbox Series X making loud whirring noises or clicking sounds after accepting a disc. That is, if it accepts the disc in the first place. Some players have been experiencing difficulties inserting their game at all. Despite not addressing the disc issue head-on, the Xbox Twitter has advised users “who experience issues with their hardware to visit msft.it/6012p8spM for fastest self-support assistance.”
Fraser Gilbert on PureXbox lists a variety of problems users are facing, as well as ways to fix these issues. These problems include no signal or corrupted image on 4K@120Hz TV’s that support VRR, graphic corruption and in-game menu issues after updating Smart Delivery games such as Gears 5, HDR captures showing up too dark, and some issues with the third party headsets and wireless controllers. In addition, users may run into “trim failed” issues when editing their 4K videos, DVD or Blu-ray playback issues, and Xbox 360 backwards compatibility problems.
Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla Screen Tearing Issues
Another problem exclusive to the Xbox is the screen tearing issues Xbox is Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. Never Ending Realm’s Samuel Rivera detailed his firsthand experience with this issue, saying: “…in both gameplay and cutscenes the screen can tear every few seconds. It is very noticeable.” He goes on to lament the fact that “It is a shame, as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla might be the best entry in the series so far, but the frequency at which the screen tearing occurs has toned down my enjoyment of the game to a large degree.”
Meanwhile, some players are still waiting to get their hands on the powerful machines they pre-ordered until late December at the latest. Playstation 5 also faces some technical difficulties.
